On November 26, the day after Thanksgiving, several hundred people
assembled in Times Square without a permit, danced in the middle of the
street in a party/protest against the Giuliani Administration's stifling
cultural policies and crackdowns on Freedom of Assembly. The cops were
taken by surprise, but eventually showed up in force, including dozens of
plainclothes cops ready to make busts. SHADOW photographers captured the
faces of a large number of these cops, and we now present them to SHADOW
INFORMATION NETWORK visitors as an educational tool. These are the cops
who sneak up to throw us in jail when we are drinking a beer or smoking a
joint. They are out there infiltrating demonstrations and starting
trouble. For our own protection, even if we cannot memorize the faces of
all of these people, all of us who refuse to knuckle under to Rudy's
fascism needs to know the general demeanor of undercover police, the kinds
of clothes that they wear, and the company they keep. Whatever you plan to
do, don't do it in front of them!
Also keep an eye out for the NYPD Video Unit, also known as TARU. They appear at every demonstration to videotape the participants as "potential evidence in the event of illegal activity."
